Kołas and Koźmin Map

by James J. Czuchra

The Kołaski family takes its current name from Kołas, a suburb of Koźmin. Kołas can be located on the linked map as a yellowish oval south west of Koźmin. You can zoom in or out on the map as you want. For example, you might want to see Kołas a little closer up or you might want to zoom back to see where Koźmin is in relation to Poznań. The map has an overlay that doesn't quite match the satellite image (but is close enough). The overlay is part of a map from when that part of Poland was part of Prussia. It shows the German names of these Polish locations. So Kołas is Kollas on the map. After gaining her independence, Poland produced similar maps with Polish names. Kollas went back to the Polish Kołas. What's also nice about this map is there is a control on the upper right side of the map that lets you control the opacity of the overlay. That is to say you can adjust the slider to how faint or strong you want the overlay to appear on the Google Map.

While this map can be demonstrated nicely with Google Earth, it requires users to have Google Earth and be able to navigate the overlays. To mimic much of the same function, MapTiler was used to create this page. It would have been nice to show the text on the same page as the map, but the map page is not scrollable to show both the text and map.
