Diocese of Buffalo, NY

The Diocese of Buffalo consists of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans, and Wyoming Counties in New York.

The map plots the locations of Polish Roman Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Buffalo. Given addresses were usually of the rectory and not the church building itself. The map shows their current locations. The Polish Catholic churches were identified based primarily on The Polish-American Parish published in 1963 by the Orchard Lake Schools, Henry P. Mucha, editor.

There are a number of discrepancies in the above source. It cites two Ss. Peter & Paul churches in Buffalo. The only existing Ss. Peter & Paul Church is of the Orthodox rite and may have had some Galician Poles as members. There is a Ss. Peter & Paul Church in Depew, NY which was not accounted for but its year of establishment is not consistent with Mucha. St. Augustine was listed as being in Buffalo but again a Polish church of that name was found in Depew. It was merged to form Blessed Mother Theresa Parish in 2009 on the campus of St. James Church. The St. Augustine building is now The Vine Wesleyan Church. Our Lady of Częstochowa and Resurrection Churches were listed for both Buffalo and Cheetowaga but were only found in Cheektowaga.

As in other diocese, some of the parishes merged with others or were closed. Some of the closed properties were sold off. For example, Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Colden, NY is now the Bread of Life Church. Ss. Peter & Paul in Depew, NY was merged with Our Lady of Pompei in 2008 and its furnishings sold. St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Perry, NY was merged with others and building sold in 2012. St. Hedwig Church in Dunkirk, NY was merged to become part of Blessed Mary Angela parish. The Our Lady of Grace Church building in Woodlawn, NY is now Holy Trinity National Catholic Church. The Transfiguration Church building in Olean, NY is now St. Joseph Marenite Church. The satellite view looks like newer structures than the building currently (2017) shown in Streetview. Transfiguration was merged with St. Johns in 2010. St. Cecilia in Oakfield, NY is listed in Mucha as Polish but some of its records would seem to contradict that. St. Cecilia is now St. Padre Pio Parish.
